Character Info
▒ Character Name: Loriel; "Lor"
▒ Canon Name: Original
▒ Canon Point: Long after Falling and just before Lucifer starts a war with Heaven.
▒ Age: Physically late 20's-early 30's. Actually 500-600 years old.
▒ Appearance: If I don't get around to drawing him, I'll be using Jackson Rathbone from his role in Dread as a PB! For a written description:
Lor has messy brown hair that he barely keeps track of; the most care he'll put into his appearance is running a hand through his hair a few times and making sure his shirt isn't stained. He's got brown eyes and rarely smiles, but when he does, it's sincere and sweet. Being that robes were a staple in the wardrobes of many angels (himself included before he ran to Tophet), he actively refuses to wear them now, instead opting for button-down shirts and trousers similar to what humans wear. He stands rather short for an angel: where most are somewhere in the area of 6' and above, Lor is an impressive 5'9-5'10 and weighs in at 160lbs. He's also got big white wings that he can hide/make visible at will. From the lowest joint to the tallest, they stretch from just above his hips to the top of his ears, with the longest outer feathers to his knees, and he has a wingspan of about 15-16 feet.

▒ Setting:
Lor comes from a universe where, instead of being potentially metaphorical and entirely debatable, Heaven and Hell are very much real and actually quite hate each other. There are three realms: Heaven, Earth, and Hell, all of which Lor has frequented and become familiar with. Heaven is as to be expected: radiant, beautiful, lush gardens and pristine white and gray buildings. It's tiered in nine layers with each tier sectioned off according to the Seven Virtues and watched over by a powerful angel, and bonus tiers for God and Purgatory. Human souls are free to walk wherever they please so long as they stay out of the angels' way, mingling with the angels and enjoying their afterlives. Demons are (obviously) forbidden here, and the angels are expected to follow the rules accordingly. Most of the citizens are clothes in beautiful, fancy Victorian-era clothes, if not outright robes as the angels wear.

Hell is a little different in that, instead of being all fire and brimstone and scary torture everywhere, it's a lot closer instead to the industrial district of a 1920's city. Everything is dark and a little bit smoky, with thick, unforgiving buildings and rocky crags and dumps in place of trees. Instead of outright torture (in the public eye anyway), the souls are left to wallow in their sins and are filled with an insatiable craving to indulge in whatever sin it was that damned them. Hell is also tiered in nine layers, in this case corresponding to the Seven Sins, with Lucifer at the top and sharing Purgatory with Heaven. Fallen angels aren't really welcome in Hell, possibly even more so than the human souls, which often leads to a few skirmishes between rowdy demons and the Fallen. Each tier is a fairly scary place with murder and drugs and brothels and vices up the wazoo, depending on what sin is represented in what tier, and are ruled over by the Circle Rulers who each answer to Lucifer directly. Some circles have more monsters than others as well: vicious creatures whose origins are unknown but are rumored to be failed demons, Fallen that didn't quite make it, or humans whose souls were too mangled in transport. What souls aren't strong enough to materialize and live out their tortures are put to other uses, i.e. recycled into consumables that everyone else devours. That's right: they eat, drink, sniff, inject, and otherwise ingest soylent green in Hell.

Earth is a little different from both Heaven and Hell: it's where the humans are the main breed and where angels and demons are rarely if ever seen. This too has an early 19th century feel to it and has a very steampunk theme, but with very small modern conveniences thrown in just to be strange. For example, while steam is the most common and widely used power source, big cities have also made use of electricity, but only in very specific instances. For example, the wealthy and upper middle class can afford refrigerators, but gas lamps and candles are still used for light. They still use a courier system and newspapers to communicate, and things like telephones and cars are completely unheard of. There are very few automated weapons, so few as to be incredibly rare and worth millions. Most believe them to be rumors, just living life peacefully unawares of the fighting going on around them.

▒ History:
A lot happens in Lor's life, but I will try to summarize! He started off as an obedient angel who accompanied cleanup crews to Earth to heal his siblings after battles with demons who would try to take over the land. After seeing the effect the battles had on the humans, he began sneaking back down to help heal them too, and fell in love with one! (Aw shit.) Long story short, he defected for her and tried to secretly live life as a human. All in all, it went pretty well. They got married and were able to live celibate lives together until Lor got struck with baby fever. They mutually agreed to try to have kids, and it got him punched down to Hell for the sin known as lust once he discovered that he really liked having sex. (Lauren was just way too pretty and amazing during the act okay how could he stop from wanting to make her feel like that again and subsequently feel good too.)

While in Hell, he found out that he really liked to drink, too, and this set off his alcoholism. Oops. He then met another Fallen named Bells who was drug-addled and a huge asshole, and somehow they became friends. Bells then adopted a broken demon named Cole for a pet/fuck buddy, and the three of them lived (not quite) happily ever after, at least until Lucifer decided to wage war on Heaven once and for all. He instituted a draft to call all able demons and Fallen angels to give themselves up and enlist in his armies, from which Lor is presently hiding.

Full details regarding his history with more information and stuff (and which is consequently much longer) can be found here, if that isn't enough!

▒ Abilities: Just to be thorough, I'll list both pros and cons to Lor's powers! Since he's an angel, there's some nifty stuff he can do. :>
Pros
⚬ Lor was a somewhat special sort of angel. Where some are messengers and others are warriors, Lor was a healer, with the innate ability to recreate/repair or destroy living organic materials. It won't work on metals and inorganics, but if someone he doesn't like won't let go of him and they push past his tolerance limit, he could, essentially, disintegrate their limbs. Wherever the point of contact is between him and another being (i.e. a hand on an arm) that is where the dissolution begins. Think of something like Orihime from Bleach when she "Rejects", which I've come to realize is an awkwardly accurate comparison.

He hates to use that side of his power, though, preferring to heal instead. It works about the same: he just has to touch them and concentrate, and given enough time (depending on the severity of the wound) he can heal most wounds. If you were born with a deformity, sorry, he can't help. But if, say, you cut your arm off, then he would be able to grow it back. Even quicker if you have the severed limb present. In that case, he could just regenerate the cells and reattach tissues and muscles and bone and all that good stuff. If the limb was missing, however, then that would probably take hours to fix. It'd be pretty labor intensive, but he could rebuild someone's arm.

⚬ Lor can also fly! Being an angel and all, that is. His wings are still intact and good to go. Like other angels, he can also make them visible or invisible at will; he prefers to keep them invisible, though, because it ruins less shirts and he prefers not to go around shirtless. Let's be practical, okay?

Cons
⚬ Like mentioned, healing others isn't a freebie Lor can just provide whenever/wherever. It takes a lot of concentration to mend people properly, and if he's disturbed then it could end up putting the patient in even more pain. He's also completely vulnerable while healing someone. All of his concentration is put to the person he's helping, so there isn't really any to spare for himself. Thus, if he were to heal someone on a battlefield, he'd need someone to watch his back, or risk getting both himself and his patient killed.

⚬ It also uses up a lot of energy and power to heal the more extensive wounds; to completely recreate a missing arm would not only take hours and hours to do, but would probably knock him out of commission for double the time it would take to heal it. So if it took around seven hours to recreate an arm, he'd be useless for pretty much the rest of the day. Nothing more than minor cuts and scrapes would be possible for him.

⚬ He cannot bring back anyone who's died, no matter how recent the death was. His healing is naturally slow, so if the wound is too grievous and he isn't fully concentrating, then it's possible that they could die in his arms. So long as he can keep their heart going, there's still a chance of survival. Once it stops, he can't help.

▒ Personality:
Before he Fell, Lor was pretty much the definition of uptight. He didn't tolerate much of anything in the way of fun, thought horsing around and slacking off was pointless, and basically did nothing but wait until his next assignment. That started to change when he met his future wife, Lauren: she helped to get him to relax a little, showed him that taking breaks actually did have a purpose, and helped him realize that there's more to life than work, work, work. He smiled more often, was much more easy-going about his duties, opened up a bit, and gradually fell in love with her. However, since his Fall, he's regressed a little bit, smiling less and closing himself off from others. He can be a little bit pessimistic, but there's still a naive sort of hopefulness about him; he likes to think of himself more as a realist than anything.

The first thing to know about this Lor, the Fallen Lor, is that in general, he's still a pretty good guy. He still has his morals and beliefs, and he sticks by them for the most part. If he sees someone in need, then he'll help them, but only inasmuch as it doesn't end up costing him too much. For example, if he saw a vagabond on the streets, he'd donate a couple of dollars, but if they asked for a ride to the other side of town he probably wouldn't open his car door for them. (Not that they have cars in Tophet, but it's a real-world example.) He doesn't condone illegal activity, but again, if it's not affecting him or it's too late for him to be of any help, then he likely won't step in. An example: Bells and his drug use. Bells had been doing drugs before he'd met Lor, so while Lor scolds him every now and then and advises him to stop using, he won't force him into it. Since his Fall, he's become rather laissez-faire about vices, since to make a fuss about others' addictions would make him a big fat hypocrite. That doesn't mean that he necessarily approves; rather, he'll quietly disapprove as much as he wants, but in the end, it's not his place to tell anyone to stop. Not anymore. He just 'tsks' quietly and goes about his way. Upon first looking at him, what you'd probably see is an introverted man who may be a little too serious for his own good.

Underneath that, however, are the parts that he buries with the alcohol and slum lifestyle. He feels that he's become a huge hypocrite in regards to the way he used to act about those who gave in to temptation and Fell, and so not only does he feel bad about the way he's acted, he also feels guilty for giving in at all. If he hadn't been weak, he wouldn't have insisted on having kids. He probably wouldn't have even started sneaking back down to the human realm to help heal them. He'd still be an angel, perfect and pure. But if he had done that, he would never have met Lauren, and he wouldn't have been able to experience life. It's a twisting conflict that he still can't get over, that he drinks to try to forget about. His self-esteem has fallen dangerously low, and if his healing people in Hell is his way of trying to make up for what he's done, he won't admit to it. He figures "this is what I deserve" and so doesn't make a very good effort to climb out of the rut he's in. He's safe and it's quiet there, except for when he misses his wife. Why should he leave? His lack of self-esteem results in a rather timid, unsure demeanor: lots of hanging back in crowds, saying "uh", "um", and stuttering a bit.

Lor has a rather dependent personality: he relied on his Father and the higher-ranked angels for orders as to how to run his life, and then he relied on Lauren for teaching him the ways of humanity. Now he relies on booze and Bells to keep him happily(?) distracted. (He used to frequent brothels, but they ended up being too expensive. Besides, it just doesn't feel as good to him without Lauren.) He doesn't have much of an instinct to action, preferring the follower role instead of the leader. Since Falling, his ego has become rather deflated, leaving him feeling rather empty. He misses Heaven, he misses Tophet, and he misses Lauren most of all. It's that longing to return to those places that keeps him from getting into any seedy business, in (very quiet and buried) hopes that maybe one day, he'll have paid his dues and be allowed to return. He's not sure when that day is, or if it's even coming. But it keeps him going, helps him to maintain his beliefs. It's also what's kept him from joining up with Hell's armies: to join up would give him someone else to follow, more orders to take. However, it would mean waging war against the things he still loves. So to him, floating in a directionless limbo is the best option he's got.

This is how he contrasts from Bells: where Bells is cynical and bitter and thinks their father is a crock of crap, Lor still believes in him. He figures, hey. This must have been wrong for a reason; He must have reasons for all of this. He created everything, He should know. While Lor doesn't openly spout off his beliefs, he holds them deep in his heart, and hopes that maybe never losing faith alongside the not doing bad things will make him a little more appealing if redemption is ever an option. Bells is screwed, probably. But hey, if Lor ever gets redeemed, at least he can send him some postcards or visit him or something.

Speaking of Bells and his bad habits - while Bells is a remorseless prick, Lor recognizes that there's still a modicum of good left in him. Why else would he have rescued Cole, after all? So while he doesn't actively try to stop him from doing drugs and ruining himself, he sometimes tries to act as his conscience. He fully realizes that Bells has a life and a being of his own, but if he can make him realize at least sometimes that some of the things he does suck, then maybe it'll be all right. The same goes for others around him: since he's in Hell, there isn't much he can do to stop all the bad that happens, but if he recognizes someone as a good person doing a bad thing out of what they may feel is necessity, then he'll try to convince them. Otherwise, it's more of a "you shouldn't do that," and a lazy sip of his alcohol.

He doesn't really get along well with other people, but that's because he has no idea how to. When he was in Heaven, he thought a little too much of himself to interact with any other angels that weren't healers; when he was in Tophet, he was too fascinated by the human lifestyle and trying to adapt to it to bother branching out much past Lauren. He interacted with the customers, but that was about it. Lauren was really his only friend, and he was happy with that. Now that he's in Hell, he isn't sure of what anyone's sins are, finds them intimidating and dangerous and isn't sure he wants to risk setting someone off. (That isn't to say that he hasn't gotten into a few bar fights, but that's to be expected when his inhibitions are lowered.) Why would he want to be friends with people who might turn around and kill him? So he's somewhat reclusive, preferring to sit down with a beer and a book than go out and socialize. It takes him a while to open up to people, but when he does, whoever that person is, they can be sure that he'll be loyal. At least so long as it doesn't involve asking him to help move any bodies or kill people.

There are also sides to himself that he's still unaware of; as an angel, all he ever felt was an unending loyalty to his father and the desire to feel useful, powerful. He had no idea that he even cared about humans until he was barred from helping them. Then, when he met Lauren, he was still as yet unaware of love, how much he liked to relax every once in a while, and how much fun doing the naughty could be. He still doesn't know that he swings both ways. Banging in general is a big no-no for angels; how was he supposed to know that he was bisexual if he was forbidden to even contemplate it? So, he's pretty deep in the closet about it, so far as to be in the depths of Narnia. "Kissing a man? Ew, no, that's not for me no thanks (but why does it intrigue me when Bells and Cole do it oh god where's my booze)." He knows that he has the capability for destruction with his powers, but isn't sure just how much since he's never really gone past giving someone the equivalent of a really bad sunburn to make them let go of him. (Quick hint, he could be pretty destructive if he put his mind to it.)

Silly quirks of his include playing with his wedding ring or chewing his lip whenever he's thinking about something and refusing to curse under any circumstances. The only times he does curse are either when he's had far too much rotgut or he's under extreme emotional duress. Luckily, the best rotgut isn't all that common. Thanks to his overwhelming sense of guilt and self-derision, he doesn't like being called Loriel anymore either, instead preferring to go by Lor since that's what Lauren called him. Loriel was his name when he was still perfect and pure; since he isn't anymore, why should he have a perfect and pure name? He also likes to make attempts at sarcasm and jokes, but he's pretty awful at it. Also his wings have a tendency of exploding into view when he's surprised. He usually has a pretty good grip on it, but sometimes it happens.

▒ Sample: FAQ questioning said it'd be okay to use a sample from a different game! I believe it was Niriall, according to the icon ;w; So this is my sample from when I apped at [community profile] ataraxion, rewritten and updated so that it…well. Sounds better. (the original can also be found here, just for reference!)

- ▒ A 500+ word prose sample. Please write these in a game-specific setting.

Even before opening his eyes, Lor knew something was wrong. He was floating, and he couldn't close his mouth. His muscles constricted around the object down his throat before he could register what it was, sending him into a choking fit and cursing himself silently. This must be it. I finally fell asleep drinking and am choking to death on the bottle. Is this seriously how I'm going to die? Truth be told, the thought made sense: people died in Hell all the time, whether or not they were lost human souls, demons looking for a fight, or other Fallen who'd lost their way. Even if he hadn't died as a means of getting to Hell, the possibility was still there. So it made sense, right?

…wasn't his life supposed to flash before his eyes, instead of this crap thinking?

A muted hsss, and the floating feeling gradually lessened as the foreign object was removed from his throat. Lor fell forward, jarring his elbows and knees as he hit the ground and gagging and coughing hoarsely while his throat muscles acclimated to their unencumbered normal state. Well. That sucked. More than anything, that really sucked. What the hell? His skin felt smothered, slimy and disgusting and almost like it was melting off of him, and when he shook off his hands to try to wipe the substance from his eyes, it didn't make him feel any better to find that it wasn't actually his skin coming off. He blinked owlishly around, confused and still pretty grossed out as he waited for his surroundings to make sense.

As he waited, his vision cleared, but not much else did. The room Lor was in was sterile, foreign, cast in a cold light that made even the notches in the walls seem menacing. He noted the doors to the chamber he'd apparently just tumbled out of closing with another quiet hiss, disturbed once he realized that there was an entire row of them, some empty like his and some with indistinct shapes still floating inside. Okay. That was creepy. Really creepy. What the hell was this place? He looked around again, and it finally dawned on him that this might not be Hell. At least, not the Hell that he was used to. For one thing, it was actually kind of chilly, a phenomenon Hell never experienced. He brought his arms up to wrap them around himself, idly noting the number across his forearm before coming to a realization.

"—I'm naked. Why- Why am I naked?" Mostly naked, anyway, save for his soaked boxers. What the hell happened to him last night? His voice was hoarse when he spoke, but it reminded him that he could. Maybe there was someone else here. Lor brushed the hair back from his face and immediately regretted it when it squished through his fingers. "Hello? Is anyone here?" A nearly unnoticeable shift inside one of the tubes was his only response, sending a chill down his back. Lor shut his eyes tight, murmuring quietly to try to calm himself down. Something he hadn't done in a long time, but maybe the situation called for it just this once. "Father, can you hear me? I don't know if this is some kind of punishment or something, but I am so sorry. Please, just let me make it out of this alive."

Once he finished, he stood up, trying not to overbalance and fall and doing a pretty bad job of it. He reached instinctually for the necklace around his neck, felt his heart skip to a stop when his fingers closed around empty air. Wide eyes stared down at his empty hand, as if unable to process that nothing was there. "My—" He stood there for a moment, dumbfounded. Didn't say or do anything, instead idly noting the numbers written across his forearm and wondering when he'd gotten a tattoo. Was this what shock felt like?

"Did you lose something?"

He nearly jumped out of his skin at the voice next to him, his wings bursting out and nearly knocking the man over. It shocked the both of them, but Lor reached out on instinct to keep the man from falling. Oh crap, were there feathers stuck to the drying goo on him now? The guy had asked him something, too— "Um, s- sorry, yeah, I did."

It looked like the other man was just as dazed as he was, staring at Lor's wings and (probably) wondering if that had really just happened. "Uh- Check, check your tattoo. There are lockers down that way," and there was a gesture toward a doorway, "and one of them should match – you'll probably find what you're looking for in there."

"Th— Thank you."

One last cursory glance to make sure the man was alright, and then Lor bobbed his head in thanks, walking briskly to the door. Take his clothes, cover him in goo, kidnap him, whatever. Anything, just not his ring… He could deal with the rest of this craziness later.

▒ Your Crime: I figure some crimes that may apply to him are: treason (for disobeying Heaven's orders and ignoring Hell's), battery (for that destructive side of his power, even if he doesn't use it), and murder (if he couldn't help someone in time). So with that in mind, I'd like to charge him with treason! (Totally original I know, but it's the only crime he's actually guilty of, and it'd make him feel like crap if/when he realizes it sobs)
